Expressions với Food – Đồ ăn

Chào các bạn, hôm nay chúng ta sẽ cùng học những “expressions” đi kèm với FOOD nhé!!

1. apple of one’s eye: a person that is adored by someone

Ví dụ: Baby Jessica is the apple of her father’s eye.

Note: nhiều bạn cho rằng đây là idiom dùng để bày tỏ tình cảm giữa những người yêu nhau, nhưng thực chất thì đây là một thành ngữ để biểu lộ tình cảm giữa rất nhiều đối tượng với nhau, ví dụ như câu trên  :nhanrang:

2.  bad egg: a person who is often in trouble

Ví dụ: I don’t want my little brother hanging around with the bad eggs on the street.

3. big cheese: very important person (VIP)

Ví dụ: I thought I was just going to interview the secretary, but they let me talk to the big cheese himself.

4. bread and butter: necessities, the main thing

Ví dụ: Just explain the bread and butter of your report. You don’t have to go into details.

5. hot potato: a controversial or difficult subject

Ví dụ: Choosing a location for our new store is a hot potato right now.

6. piece of cake: very easy

Ví dụ: That Maths exercise is a piece of cake for me.

7. (not my) cup of tea: something you enjoy (usually used negatively)

Ví dụ:

Opera isn’t exactly my cup of tea.

My son’s new girlfriend is not my cup of tea.

8. (don’t) cry over spilled milk: get upset over something that has happened and cannot be changed

Ví dụ: The mirror is broken and we can’t fix it. There’s no need to cry over spilled milk.

9. have all your eggs in one basket: rely on one single thing

Ví dụ: Even though I’m majoring in Art, I’m taking a maths course because my Dad says I shouldn’t put all of my eggs in one basket.

10. apples and oranges: such a big difference between/among things that they cannot be compared.

Ví dụ: You cannot compare ballet to jazz dance, they’re apples and oranges.

Note: một idiom cũng có ý nghĩa tương tự và liên quan đến FOOD là: chalk and cheese – “My brother and I are like chalk and  cheese.”
