The first bar chart compares the number of marriages and divorces in the us over the period of 30 years, beginning in 1970. The second bar chart illustrates the proportion of mature Americans according to their marital status over the same period.
Overall, there was a gradual decrease in the figure for marriages during the researched period. Besides, the percentage for marriaged couples accounted for the highest in two years in 1970 and 2000.
It is clear that the number of marriages in 1970 and that for marriages in 1980 were the same at 2.5 million. This figure gradually fell to 2 million in 2000. The number for divorced people witnessed a fluctuation between 1970 and 2000, although it always remained above 1 million. Especially, the number of divorcees reached a peak of 1.4 million in 1980.
The vast majority of adult Americans were married, at about 70%in 1970 and 60% in 2000. Meanwhile, the proportion of people who were never married and those who divorced both increased in these two years from 15% to 20%, and from 3% to 9%. By contrast, over the same period, the widowed people saw a slight decline from 8% to 7%
