      Topic: Discuss the advantage and disadvantages of advertising
      Thanks to the rapid growth of mass media recently, advertising industry has contributed significantly to the development of our modern lives. Although a lot of people believe that advertising offers tremendous benefits, the opponents of this idea argue that it may cause several drawbacks.
      To begin with, it is undeniable that advertising has provided plenty of considerable benefits for society, consumers and businesses. In fact, the main function of advertising is to supply consumers with accurate and adequate information about all the alternatives of products and services available for them. In addition, advertising industry plays an integral role in fostering full employment and facilitating economic welfare. Particularly, if advertising had not been innovated, companies would not have effective methods to introduce their products and services to target customers. For example, as the first corporation applied strong promotion and intense sampling in the cosmetic industry, Estee Lauder, which is a famous American cosmetic company, was able to build up its brand recognition worldwide. The successful advertising story of Estee Lauder was then replicated by many other manufacturing companies.
      Nevertheless, advertising is criticized for its negative impacts to society. Advertising persuades people to buy a product without declaring them its disadvantages, which might possibly lead to consumer’s dissatisfaction and frustration. Furthermore, advertising is liable for children’s impulsive purchases by associating the product with a desirable lifestyle. Lacking the ability of critical thinking and appropriate decision making, children generally are the most vulnerable victims of this strategy. For instance, fast food and carbonated soft drink advertisements have the aim to target on children as one of their major customers, based on the fact that children are not fully aware of damaging consequences caused by junk food on their health.
      In conclusion, advertising is a necessary business activity that brings certain advantages to human beings. However, it might create disadvantages when it stimulates or even deceives people to procure unqualified or unsuitable products.
