The table below gives information on consumer spending on different items in five different countries in 2002.

    ——————————————————————————–

The table compares the consumption in terms of three main categories, namely food/drinks/tobacco, wearing, and leisure/education between five countries in 2002.

It is clear that food, beverage and smoking by far accounted the largest percentage of consumption in all countries. Also, spending on leisure/education took up the least proportion of their total budget.

Turkey and Ireland spent 28.91% and 32.14% of their expenditure on eating, drinking and cigarette respectively, which were much higher than the rates of the three other countries which were under one-fifth each. Meanwhile, clothing and footwear was spent mostly by Italian with 9.0%. The remaining countries’ statistics however remained at the relative same level and all below 7% in relative terms.

Turkey was the most popular country for recreational and educational category where 4.35% of the residents’ income went on this purpose, compared to 1.98% for Spain, where the investment into this section came as the lowest rank.
