Underground Railways Systems
Kilometres of route
Passengers per year
The table compares the different underground railway systems in six popular countries in terms of the established date, the route length and the number of passengers per year.
It is clear that London is the oldest underground railway service provider and has the longest railway route among six compared cities. However, Tokyo is by far the most popular metro.
London’s underground railway system was built in 1863 with 394 kilometers long, and Paris’s metro ranked second in terms of longevity and length. Despite being established later, Tokyo received the highest number of passengers with 1927 million people annually, and this figure was much larger than that for any other cities. However, these three cities were always the most popular railway systems of all time.
Established in 1976, Washington DC possessed the fourth longest line with 126 kilometers and received 144 passengers each year, which were almost three times as many as those for two remaining cities. Kyoto and Los Angeles were two youngest and shortest metros, which were constructed in 1981, 2001, and 11, 28 kilometers long respectively. Furthermore, these two cities received just under 50 passengers each year.
