The only way to improve road safety is to give much stricter punishments on driving offenses. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
There is an opinion that driving offense should be punished more strictly, which is the only solution to enhance road safety. Stricter punishments are essential but they are not the only method to improve road safety. Besides that, there are still other effective measures.
It can be denied that stronger punishments will be effective to prevent accidents caused by driving breach. Motoring offense also are crimes including two levels of penalties. Heavy fines or driving bans could be used for custodial sentences while serious offense could face on prison sentences. For example, in the United Kingdom causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drink could result in 14 years imprisonment, an unlimited fine, and a ban from driving for at least two years.
On the other hand, there are various soft measures in order to increase the degree of road safety. First of all, installation of speed cameras can minimize the number of over fast drivers. Secondly, traffic calming is usually used in roads of neighborhoods, hospitals, schools, public spaces, etc. to create safer environment for street activities of children and pedestrians such as walking, playing street footballs, street dancing, etc. Moreover, one of additional way to limit car accidents is vehicle inspections being compulsory in many countries in the world to ensure that vehicles conform to regulations safety and emission.
To sum up, both harsher penalties and other measures play an important role to raise level of street safety. However, in my opinion long-term solution is to encourage people use public transport like bus, tram or train, etc. instead of driving private vehicles to toward sustainable development.
