University students always focus on one specialist subject, but some people think universities should encourage their students to study a range of subjects in addition to their own subject. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Nowadays, most university students are required to choose their specialized subjects to pay more attention on them. Some people have another perspective about this. In my opinion, I believe that, at university stage, university should encourage its students to study a variety of different subjects.
Time at university is like the time for student to discover what they are really good at or what they are enthusiastic about. When they learn various subjects, they definitely have more chance to find out which field they want to focus on and then if they have enough determination and passion, they would go on at postgraduate stage.
Besides that, when learning a variety of subjects students are provided different basic knowledge that could help them a lot if they decide to go to work right after graduation. In our fast paced world, everything has changed day by day, so having fundamental knowledge on many fields is a necessary condition to help people to adapt to the change as quick as possible.
In addition, focusing on just one or two specialized subjects could limit the students’ vision in lieu of helping them to have an open-minded thinking and an ability to accept different conceptions from other people. This is definitely not the purpose of education regardless in any educational level.
To conclude, after considering dissenting opinions, I still prefer that students at university should be guided and promoted to engage more on different subjects in order to acquire more valuable experience as well as knowledge.
