We Should Have a Quota for Women on Corporate Boards. Do you agree or disagree with this?
Some people argue that it is necessary to require a certain number of women in management boards of private firms. However, I totally disagree with this viewpoint for several reasons.
To begin with, imposing a quota for women on corporate boards is an imparity and an obstacle to success of corporates. Specifically, businesses must reward their employees based on their merits rather than genders. A merit-based reward system will in turn facilitate the development of companies, since opportuities are given fairly to workers regardless of their genders. In fact, successful multinational corporates always state that they are equal opportunity employers, which means that they provide chances equally to both women and men. Which by no means refers to keep the number of women and men in management board equal or at a specific proportion.
Furthermore, a quota for females in high positions will dismiss abilities of women as it takes away their accomplishments. If a woman gets a seat on management board, people might perceive that she gets it because of gender regulations rather than her talents. In other words, female-hiring policies which seem to promote the gender balance, but actually negate achievements of women. Precisely, women should be allowed to have a place at the table and respected for the work that got them there.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that setting a quota for women on management committee is unnecessary and even destructive to the progress of a company as a whole as well as its female members.
