Organized tour to remote areas and community is increasingly popular. Is it a positive or negative development for the local people and the environment?

It is true that there is a rising number of tours which are set up to visit remote and unspoiled destinations. Regarding short-term advantages, it seems to bring more job opportunities to local inhabitants and therefore raise their living standard. However, the surrounding nature might be polluted and the health of native community would be damaged as long-term consequences.

In terms of benefits, if the tourism industries at those unpopular places develop, the inhabitants would definitely enjoy a higher living standard. Specifically, the increase in the number of tourists coming to those destinations would lead to a higher demand for accommodation and food. As a result, more and more hotels, motels, food stores and restaurants are constructed to fulfill the need. Consequently, inhabitants would be employed to work at those local amenities so they could earn higher income which they would use to pay for their daily expenses and their children’s education. This certainly raises local people’s standard of living.
Despite the promising benefits of higher employment opportunities mentioned above, the development of tourism would also cause the environmental pollution and put local people’s health at risk. As there are more crowds of tourists visiting the unspoiled areas, the number of vehicles such as coaches, buses and taxies would also climb up, which definitely generates a higher carbon dioxide emission. As a long-term drawback, the local environment could be polluted significantly. This is also a big threat to the health of the local community. Those inhabitants will be more likely to suffer respiratory diseases, such as lung cancer.

In conclusion, local inhabitants at the remote destinations could have more job opportunities and earn higher income due to the development of tourism, but their health would be at risk in the future as the air pollution caused by the growth of transportation.
