Task 2: Maintaining public libraries is a waste of money since computer technology can replace their functions. Do you agree or disagree?
It is true that in digital era, online libraries can be designed to replace completely traditional ones. While I accept that can bring some specific advantages, I believe that public libraries need to be preserved.
On the one hand, there are a variety of reasons why people should prefer reading on the internet. One reason is that because of enormous technological advances, most of people nowadays own their private smartphone or laptop. For this reason, they can easily access to the internet to read books as well as update the latest information all around the world timely and freely. Furthermore, if people totally read online newspaper in the future, environment could be protected because a large amount of paper will be reduced. Additionally, the public do not need to spend their money buying expensive printed books since they can download it on the internet and restore it in their computer.
On the other hand, public libraries still play an important role in the development of society. Firstly, in many rural areas, accessing to the internet is still restricted because of the lack of infrastructures. For this reason, public library is an ideal place in which people especially children can acquire general knowledge in many fields. Secondly, using internet to update information can cause many difficulties for the elderly. So, they tend to be loyal to printed books. Finally, rare and valuable books and materials in many areas which are extremely hard to get on the internet are maintained carefully in public libraries.
In conclusion, it is certainly true that online libraries can bring many enormous advantages, but this is by no means that the beneficial functions of traditional libraries are not took account into.
