The line graph gives information about birth rates in China and the US and how these rates changed over a 80-year period from 1920 to 2000.
It is clear that the birth rates of both countries decreased over the period shown. The American birth rate in most years was higher than the figure for China, although the two trends were similar in terms of general decline.
In the 1920 – 1935 period, the Chinese birth rate increased from 10 to 15%. However, in the following decade, the birth rate in China fell sharply to below 5% before peaking at 20% in the 1950s. By contrast, 5 years later, there was a dramatic decrease in the figure of China by over 10%, falling approximately 2% in 2000.
Meanwhile, the US had the similar birth rate of 12% to that of China in 1920. The figure of America fluctuated in between 12% to 14% during 1920s and 1930s until it touched the lowest point at 4% in the 1945 period. In the 1950s, the birth rate of the USA increased significantly to exactly 15%, which was its highest point during 80-year period. Throughout the remainder of the period, there was a gradual rise in the US birth rate, which fell to 7% by the year 2000.
