Many criminals re-offend after they have been punished. Why do some people continue to commit crimes after they have been punished, and what measures can be taken to tackle this problem?
A pyramid of criminals go back to crimes after being released. There are many reasons explaining their re-offending and steps have to be taken to reduce the problem.
Two of the biggest reasons are poverty and lack of education. People who commit crimes commonly have no choice because they are not capable of making a living. Being not well-educated or even being given no education leads to unemployment. More terribly, with the criminal records, offenders find it quite difficult to have a job after their punishment, therefore their opportunity to become positive citizens vanishes. That is mostly why they choose to come back to crime path. Moreover, prison systems can be a reason as it possibly makes the situation worse. Specifically, inmates can be negatively psychologically influenced by correctional officers especially the corrupted ones. For example, in “Orange is the new black” – a series based on a true story, a female prisoner becomes frantic and then gets killed by a prison officer. A harsh environment in jail makes criminals even fiercer.
Government could certainly make more efforts to tackle this problem. Firstly, they could introduce policies of practical training in prison from which inmates can learn essential skills for their future employment. Secondly, authorities could consider rehabilitation programs and community services which prepare criminals for their release into the society. In this way, prisoners would be turned to be helpful. Finally, communities should be encouraged to welcome offenders returning to life and support them with work as well as accommodations.
In conclusion, re-offending is currently a serious problem in many societies and measures need to be taken by both government and individuals to prevent its dire consequences.Attachments:
