Overview, it is apparent that the number of marriages experienced a gradual decline in 2000 compared to that in 1970 while the proportion of adults who were divorced was higher than those who were married in 2000
In term of the number of marriage and divorces, in 1970, 2.5 million of people in USA were married, and this figure declined moderately to 2 million in 2000. In the meanwhile, there were 1 million of divorces in 1970, then it witnessed a slight growth to 1.4 million in 1980, followed by a fall to 1 million in 2000.
As regards their marial status, the proportion of people who married in 1970 was 70%, just a bit higher than that figure in 2000, which made up 60%. In stark contrast, the percentage of adults who were divorced in 2000 showed a fourfold increase to 9% compared with 2% in 1970. Similarly, the figure for never married status in 2000 was bigger than that in 1970, which was 20% and 15% respectively.
