As a current trend, a lot of high school students are advised to take a gap year for working before entering tertiary education. While making money helps students prepare finance for their higher education, the loss of study motivation is the drawback of this.
On the one hand, it is stressful for many students to have enough budget to spend on living, tuition fees, and accommodation during their university time. Top-tier universities, especially those in North America, often charge thousands of dollars per academic year as well as locating in major cities having high living expenses have been forcing students in the rush of earning money to afford them. Consequently, they have to work part-time on the top of study which would greatly affect their academic performance. Having a year to make money would ease the burden on financial needs, but it also might make students give up their learning.
On the other hand, being in the comfort of enough finance and against the stress of study for a year would make students stay far away from schooling. Thus, lots of them are usually scared of returning to study, or if they try to make their university dream come true, many often fall behind schedule because of unfamiliarity with schooling for a long time and then drop out. As a result, many countries, such as the US, disallow students having off-campus jobs during their university time, but would make more students avoid coming back to schools.
In conclusion, taking a break year to earn money would be a good idea to have sufficient budget for students’ higher education, but it also bring them far from schools due to motivation loss. To fit well, they should balance between the two sides and try to overcome it.
