Topic: The advantages of the spread of English as a global language will continue to outweigh its disadvantages. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
In the modern time, it is true that English is gaining popularity on its way to become an international language. While there are strong arguments in support of both sides of this phenomenon, it is my belief that the benefits offered by the upsurge in English usage will keep overwhelming its downsides.
First off, it is arguable that the advantages the proliferation of English brings to life are undoubtedly enormous. To begin with, English is one of the most powerful tools of communication. By having a global language, not only can we get to know people in our country but also expand our circle of acquaintances to other nations. On top of it, the widespread of English also acts an effective way to alleviate the unemployment. Indeed, the emergence of multinational companies, Unilever for example, provide workforce from different cultural backgrounds with the opportunities to get a decent job on condition that they have a good command of English. Thanks to this worldwide language, even people in deprived area can stand a good chance of leading a comfortably-off life.
Opponents of this idea might maintain that as beneficial as it seems, the expansion of the universal language tongue is a sign of America imperialism, hence posing a potential threat to cultural diversity. They are also convinced that the excessive use of English is the driving force behind the brain drain in various countries. However, I think those thoughts are rather ill-founded because the facts might be the opposite. In reality, international language enables producers in different nations to make their movies became known all over the world through the means of English subtitles. Furthermore, had it not been for English, people would not have gained access to a wealth of information, which will contribute to the development of their country.
In conclusion, despite the negative effects English may exert on our lives, I am convinced that the enhancements it brings about are more influential.
