Nowadays, some buildings such as offices and schools have open-space design instead of separate rooms. Why is it so? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

The proclivity that more and more and more offices decide to restructure their workplaces in an open and accessible way has currently been the subject of increasing concern. This essay will go further into the main rationales before discussing the benefits and drawbacks of this style.

First of all, there are quite a great deal of suggestion that workplaces should be made more friendly and convenient in order to boost the productivity and improve employees’ association.
Indeed, lack of walls, offices will become relatively more spacious and workers could also have a better interaction with others. For example, more time and effort is saved when merely simple things like passing mails and documentaries or leaving notes or communicating can be done straight while sitting. Secondly, building an open-space workplace allows managers to control and keep a closer eye on their employees during work hours. This will reduce the danger of inappropriate behaviors such as: sleeping or eating or even doing personal things in the offices.

On the downsides, numerous opinions disapprove of the idea for the infringement of their privacy. As a matter of fact, when humans work next to one another, it is quite hard for them to ignore others’ computers’ screens. Accidentally or intentionally, information of one can be easily revealed and overheard by their surroundings. Moreover, some would state that they find it difficult to concentrate on their work under their bosses’ observation. Clearly, when being supervised, employees will have to face with such mental pressure as they always think they need to act and behave flawlessly. As a result, the quality of work can be degraded considerably.

To conclude, this open space of office design possesses both advantages and disadvantages. It is suggested that there should be a combination between the conventional style and this new one to further exploit the benefits of both, which consequently makes the offices more fascinating and for the workers to fulfill their duties.
