Nowadays, more and more older people who need employment compete with the younger people for the same jobs. What problems this causes? What are solutions?

The labor market has become tightening nowadays because of the competition among young and old applicants. There are a number of problems behind this trend and several solutions should be proposed to solve this difficult situation.
There are two primary problems in the job market caused by age competition. Firstly, due to age discrimination, older candidates will have difficulty in finding jobs even with the same abilities and qualifications compared to younger applicants. For example, some Vietnamese companies only hire young employees. As a consequence, the unemployment rate sharply increases which means a huge number of people have to live on the edge of poverty. Secondly, numerous failed applicants have to work in unfavored jobs which cannot enable them to work with the best quality. To be more specific, firms cannot maximize their profits owing to the low labor productivity.
Some simple measures should be implemented to deal with the root cause of age competition in labor market. On an individual level, older staff should constantly broaden both social and academic knowledge to gain a competitive edge in the fierce competition. Moreover, the human resource apartment needs to prioritize to review a candidate’s previous experience whether they are fit the job description or not. This solution helps the company hire the right person and reduce financial loss in terms of profits and training budget. In addition, younger colleague cooperation will help old workers adapt to changes in the working environment. As a result, old employees could perform at the highest level.
In conclusion, the problem of the rivalry between the young and the old in the job market can be tackled by effective measures on both an individual level and organizational level.
