Advertising discourages people from being different individuals by making us want to be and to look the same.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is true that advertising has a big influence on the buying behavior of consumers. Therefore, many people believe that adverts make people become less distinctive. From my perspective, I agree with this statement to some extent.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that advertising powerfully shapes consumer’s behaviors and attitudes which takes away people’s freedom to make choice. To be more specific, products from well-known brands such as Unilever and P&G have long dominated the market because their advertisements are professional and appealing to consumers. This attracts many people to purchase the same products, which makes them have a similar favour over certain goods and items. For example, the advertising campaign with American Dental Association’s decades-long endorsement of Crest has effectively made Crest become the most consumed toothpaste brand in the US. Furthermore, advertisements encourage consumers to keep up with the latest trend to make them look trendy and fashionable alike the crowd. For instance, the Lady Dior bag line is advertised that it is specifically designed for people who have a good taste of fashion, therefore, global fashion followers crave for possessing them because these luxury bags could effortlessly show off their social status and fashion taste.
On the other hand, advertising provides information of different kind of products so that it offers people specific choices that are suitable for their characteristics and financial situation. For one item such as shoes, teenagers tend to choose sneakers due to its greater ease in moving while office staff prefers formal shoes which appropriate for their work.
In a nutshell, although there are many people having the same choices due to the power of advertising, others will take into consideration that whether this product is appropriate for their real situation. Therefore, I partly agree that adverts make people want to look alike.Attachments:
