Some people think that the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison sentences. Others, however, believe there are better alternative ways of reducing crime. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Over the past few decades, juvenile delinquency has been a controversial issue among the public. Some adopt a view that law makers should prolong prison time to diminish current crime rate while opponents make a case for other measures. From my perspective, the latter outweighs the former.
On the one hand, it is unavoidable to recognize that stricter jail time can contribute to decreasing the number of convicts. As a result of long-lasting imprisonment, potential law breakers will control their indignation before committing a crime. When stretching the period on prison, such prisoners will have more chances to be rehabilitated, lessening the possibility of reoffence in their later life. Some recent reports have supported this policy which reveals that declining burglary rate in UK is attributable to tougher prison sencences.
On the other hand, notwithstanding its effectiveness, I believe this proposal is not the best In social regards, extending jail time usually requires a larger budged for these law offenders, which is the waste of money. It is paradoxical to squander tax sources which come from decent citizens to feed and accommodate such felons. Instead, with the same time of prison, more resources should be spent on education and training, which is what inmates really need. Thanks to this treatment, they will have the second chance to restart their life with better knowledge, leading to the drop of reoffence probability subsequently. At the heart of the matter, state officials should take roots of crime seriously. The crime rate only really dwindles when goverments eradicate the status of poverty, the main reason of law-violating activities.
In conclusion, although lengthening prison time can play a part in preventing crime, this is not the most effective solution. Meanwhile, education and social harmony are the best medicines for this dilemma.
