For many employers, formal academic qualifications are becoming more important than experience? Why is that? Is it a positive or negative development?
It is becoming increasingly popular that academic qualification is one of the most decisive elements in the recruitment process as it is the best indicator of an individual’s ability. In spite of making the recruitment process efficient and effortless, in my opinion, it is a negative development. There are some reasons for this issue.
The first reason is that employing people having academic excellence discourage graduates from accumulating hands-on working experience. This greatly contributes to generate unskilled and inexperienced workforce. For example, the programs at the university only focus on teaching theories, which leads to the fact that students do not have golden opportunity to improve practical skills. It is grounds for the birth of a huge proportion of graduates with underdeveloped skills. More adversely, in the high times of globalization, the competitive capacity of local workers will significantly decrease. In addition, the preference for formal academic qualifications creates opportunities for the rich holding a degree without going to class. They are not well-equipped with sufficient specialized knowledge.
In addition, the university curriculum focuses on teaching them with a great deal of knowledge. The courses are relatively demanding and challenging. Accordingly, the degree holders are considered to have sufficient specialized knowledge. However, this shifts students from gaining real knowledge to ways of achieving high scores. Consequently, this results in the mindset that passing exam with flying color is enough for students to seek for a job.
In conclusion, the high emphasis on hands-on working experience brings about various benefits because it provides highly-skilled labors in the competitive market coupling with decreasing the unemployment rate.
