The percentage of overweight children in western society has increased by almost 20% in the last ten years. Discuss the causes and effects of this disturbing trend.
In the last decade, there has been a considerable growth in the proportion of obese children in western nations. There are a number of reasons for this trend which has been having a significant impact on both individuals and the community as a whole.
There are two prime reasons why the rate of overweight children has risen in western countries. Firstly, most children are addicted to fast food which is not good for their health. As the food contains a large amount of sugar and fat, kids are able to consume many bad calories, leading to weight gain and ultimately obesity. Secondly, a sedentary lifestyle is an enormously contributing factor to this phenomenon. For example, children often spend much of their time on watching TV or surfing websites without taking part in outdoor activities; however, these actions are also encouraged by most parents because they strongly believe that their kids are safer at home.
Obviously, this tendency could have negative consequences in terms of both individuals and society. A serious concern is that overweight children are likely to face health issues. This due to the fact that these kids could suffer from the risks of contracting chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart attack. Consequently, having a shorter life expectancy and less healthy lives, stemming from these illnesses, are inevitable. Another negative effect is that obesity may pose more huge challenges for governments. For instance, the countries will lack the future well-qualified workforce if an increase in the number of obese kids become prevalent since they play an integral part in the progress of the nations.
In conclusion, there are several causes of the rise in the overweight children’s proportion. As a result, there could be negative influences on individuals and the society at large.
