The best way for governments to solve the problem of traffic congestion is providing free public transport in 24 hours per day, and seven days a week.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Some people believe that offering fare-free public transport everytime and everyday is the best measure in order to address traffic jams. Although this is an effective measure, I contend that it is far from the best remedy.
On the one hand, I believe that providing free charge of public transport systems is not the best way to tackle congested roads because of its drawbacks. Firstly, if government implements this policy, the excessive budget will be allocated for this field and government maybe lack money to perform other functions, such as constructing hospitals or schools. Secondly, heavy traffic no longer happens everytime and, it is likely to solely exist in rush hours due to the geat number of commuters. It, therefore, is completely unneccessary and waste money to eliminate cost to public transportation networks, for instance, at night.
On the other hand, there are some other desirable solutions to resolve this issue. A significant measure is to impose “green tax” on fossil fuels to discourage residents from using private vehicles and encourage them to switch to public transports. Another remedy is that the government should stimulate cicizens in congested areas to move to other cities. This could be done by relocating firms and industry zones to satellite cities or building more public services and entertainment destinations in such places.
For aforementioned reasons, I am strongly of the opinion that public transport without charge is not the best solution to handle the problem of traffic jams due to its disadvantages, including waste of time and money. Also, there are some resolutions, such as introducing taxes on fossil fuels, to address this issue.Attachments:
