The diagram illustrates changes in the rate of birth in China and the USA over the period 1920 to 2000.
Overall, there was a general decline of birth rates of both countries, despite some fluctuations. In particular, the birth rate of the USA in most years was higher than that of China.
In 1920, the birth rate of China gained 10%. It then fluctuated in the next 30 years before reaching the peak of 20% by 1950. Nevertheless, in the 1950-2000 period, the birth rate in China lost momentum and plunged to its rock bottom at 7% in 2000.
Over the same period, the birth rate in the USA varied less significantly than that in China. It held 11%, which was merely lower than its counterpart – in the USA, in 1920, before dropping to 5% in 1945. By contrast, the rate increased by 10% in 1945 and fell to 3% in the remainder of the survey.
