The table below presents the number of children ever born to women aged 40-44 years in Australia for each year the information was collected since 1981.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The table illustrates the percentage of different childbirth groups of 40 – 44 year old women living in Australia from 1981 to 2006

Overall, the proportion of women having two children was highest over time. Also, the proportion of women having more than two children decreased while the proportion of one child group was increasing in all time.

From 1981 to 1986, the percentage of four or more children group decreased by 27,6% to 18,9%. While women had three child fell slightly from 27,4% to 27%. Additionally, only 7,6 % women had one child, but next five years, it was increased to 8,7%.

In 1996, the percentage of one child group was lower than two children 11,3% and 38,2% respectively, however, it was continually increased to 13,2% in next decade. In 2006 the percentage of women having two children reach a peak at 38,3%. While the groups of three and four or more children still fell. The group of four or more children reduce the percentage at 11% in 2006 which also was the lowest percentage in 2006. By contrast, the percentage of no child group increased rapidly from 8.5% to 15.9% since 1981.
