Some people believe that crime is a result of social problems and poverty, others think that crime is a result of bad person’s nature. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
It is true that the question of whether crime results from social issues and poverty or individual characteristics remains a source of controversy. While many people think that the innate characteristics lead to an increase in crime rate, I strongly believe that the problems in society and poverty contribute to more rise in crime.
On the one hand, the bad characters of people cause an increasing crime. The people who are cruel easily turn into a career of crime than kind one. For example, students bullying other girls and boys at school could become violent offenders in the future such as murderers or killer, which will pose negative influences on society. Another example is that young people who are greed or laziness are likely to wish to acquire easy money instead of working hard. These are strong reasons why people having the inborn bad nature are more likely to become lawbreakers.
On the other hand, it seems to me that crime is a result of the social problems and poverty. Firstly, unemployment results in a rise in the number of criminals in many countries over decades. Without a job or work, people are able to be tempted to steal from others so that they could make ends meet, or support their own lives or their family. Furthermore, due to poverty, many people who cannot enrol in schools in developing countries tend to involve in criminal activities. However, they could not recognise that they commit a crime owing to lack of understanding of the important laws. As a result, the turn to offenders as a victim of poverty.
In conclusion, although some people believe that crime rate is attributable to the nature of an individual, it seems to me that the social conditions and poverty are primary reasons for crime.
