Topic 31(IP): It is observed that in many countries not enough students are choosing to study science subject. What are causes? And what will be effects on society?
In many parts of the world, there is currently a lack of students who choose science as the major in universities and colleges. This problem happens due to some reasons, and it can have adverse impacts on society.
There are several causes discouraging students to get involved in science. First of all, these subjects usually are more difficult and demanding than others, which requires students to have to put much effort into their study. For example, my roommate who is doing a course in biology said that he had to conduct too many experiments and complete numerous researches in his curriculum which made a great pressure on his mind. Another reason can be taken into consideration is fewer employment opportunities available for graduates in science fields compared to economics and business-related subjects. As a result, after graduation, many students do not seek decent jobs which relate to their majors and enable them to develop what they learnt at school. Therefore, they tend to choose other subjects which allow them to find jobs more easily.
A shortage of science students can result in various negative effects on society. The first impact is that when fewer students decide to learn about science, there would be a serious shortage of employees working in these areas. This could lead to slow developments of technology which prevent improvement in people’s life quality. A good example is that people may hard produce a newer smart phone with better functions. Besides, a vast majority of students prefer studying economic subjects while the number of job vacancies in these fields is limited. Specifically, a competitive job market could dispose of many students and they would have to face unemployment which increases the burden on society.
In conclusion, the shortage of students choosing science subjects results from different factors and this problem might bring about serious impacts.Please kindly check!
