The chart gives data about the differences in the proportion of boys and girls joining the most popular sports in New Zealand in 2002.
Overall, it is clear that there are notable distinctions in the percentage of boys and girls participating in various kinds of sport. Nevertheless, it can also be seen from the chart that the proportion of people who took part in basketball and tennis was quite similar.
Among girls, netball was the most played sport with a quarter percentage. Swimming was the second most played one with 22%. Approximately 7% and 8% of girls participated in basketball and tennis respectively. Compared with other kinds of sports, cricket and martial arts presented the two smallest percentages of girls joining with less than 5 % for both of these types. Approximately 6% and 5% of girls took part in soccer and athletics while the proportion of participants in other unspecific sports was about 10%.
On the contrary, it is obvious that soccer was played by the highest proportion of boys with 25%. Among boys, this figure was followed by other unspecific kinds of sports, swimming, cricket and martial arts with 18% and 13%, 12% and 9% respectively. The sport with the smallest participant figures was netball with only 1%.
