The line graph compares the percentage of people with an age of 65 years or more in the USA, Japan, and Sweden from 1940 to 2040.
Overall, it is clear that there were considerable upward trends in three nations during the research period. Additionally, Japan’s life expectancy was the lowest point in 1940 but it will expect to soar in the future.
In 1940, the proportion of people aged 65 and over was the highest in the USA, at about 9%, which was half as high as Japan’s figure while in Sweden it was in the middle almost 7%. In 1980, the figures for the USA and Sweden saw an increase and reached a peak at about 15% and 14% respectively, whilst during the first 20 years the rate of elderly people fell gradually and remained constant in the next 30 years, with under 3%.
In 2040, it is predicted that Japan’s older population will dramatically increase and hit the peak at almost 27%, compared to about over 25% of elder people in Sweden and approximately 23% of people aged 65 and over in the USA.

The pie charts illustrate changes in the proportion of different areas of the world between 1990 and 2000.

Overall, it is clearly seen that there was a sharp increase in the number of humans on the planet, from 1.6 million to 6 billion in just one century. Additionally, the biggest two parts of populations in Asia and Europe showed the different degree of decline.

From 1900 to 2000, the proportion of people living in Asia was the highest in both years, at 60% in 1990 and a slightly lower, with 54% in 2000. Likewise, the figure for Europe (including Russia) was the second greatest part and it stood at 25% of the total in 1990, compared to 14% in 2000. By contrast, Africa’s percentage was more than doubled from 4% to 10% while that of America was almost tripled in the same period.

In stark contrast, however, North America’s percentage remained constant at 5% during time research. Meanwhile, the Middle East and North Africa, a new category in 2000, reaching 6% of world population.
