In recent year, western outfits have become more popular than countries’ traditional costumes. The underlying reasons for this are varied; and this trend can be seen as both negative and positive.
The prevalence of Western media and people’s perceptions of modernity are two main factors contributing to the popularity of Western clothing. First and foremost, with the development of cutting-edge technology, Western mass media namely Hollywood movies, television shows and fashion magazines is gaining in expansion on global scale, which has a pivotal role in exposing and popularizing products from designer labels or fashion houses in famous fashions capitals such as Milan, Paris and New York. Furthermore, in an attempt to make the economy progress, Eastern countries emulate not only the Western technology but aslo Western culture which are considered modern and advanced. As the result, wearing suit at work, which is perceived as a professional attitude by Western people, is also widely adopted by officers in nations outside Europe.
Although this development paves the road to integration into other communities, it pose a threat to countries’culture. On the positive side, nowadays, European-style clothing seems to be used as an universal standard of fashion. Therefore, when traveling abroad or working in international companies, people who follow this trend tend to acquire a better fit into the surroundings. On the negative side, it is undeniable fact that a large number of people, especially the youth, prefers modern costumes to the point of obsession and shy away from their traditional clothes; that, consequently, triggers the cultural assimilation as well as wreaks havoc on the national identity.
