Topic: Some people believe that unpaid community service should be a compulsory part of high school programmes (for example working for a charity, improving the neighbourhood or teaching sports to younger children). To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Many high school students nowadays are expected to devote more time to voluntary community works such as charity which people think should be compulsory for every students in their programmes. While I agree that it is a great idea for both students and their communities, I believe that it should not be taken so seriously.
On the one hand, every communities needs help and contribution from their residents, especially volutarily. High school students are one of the potential sources that can answer to those responses as they are young, strong and energectic but less sociable people. By providing them with communities works such as charity or improving the neighbourhood, not only does their community or resident is favorable for better living but also can they receive more life experiences as well as new connection with others and those things can benefit their study records and their life later on. As the results, it is reasonable to turn community service as a mandatory part of high school programmes for students for both sides’ good.
On the other hand, this action can have some downsides. Firstly, it is against the nature of community works which is volutary and make people done works happily for others’ happiness. By making it compulsory, many students would considered it as a punishment or forcement for authorities’ benefits rather than a good gesture for society and they will find the way to stay away from it as soon as their high school graduation. Secondly, high school students should be encouraged to follow their interests or favourite hobby or keep up with their academic studies than do things they do not enjoy or keen on and making society volunteer works as compulsory only develop more hates than understanding or love.
In conclusion, as much as I agree the benefit of community service for society and students, I believe it should be encouraged for students to do rather than a compulsory part of their school programmes.
