Consumers are faced with increasing numbers of advertisements from competing companies. To what extent do you think consumers are influenced by advertisements? What measures can be taken to protect them?
It is true that people are inundated with all kinds of advertisement from the mass media. While I accept that advertising has an unavoidable influence on consumers, particular in young people and several feasible solutions should be adopted to protect them.
Although commercial have many its benefits but I believe that advertisement brings more disadvantages than advantages which consumers have to face with them on daily basis. Firstly, it aims to persuade people to spend money to purchase products that they do not really need to. Companies promote their new products and services by many different ways ranging from television commercials, newspaper to leaflets which attract people’s attention. When people spend over-spending their money on unnecessary goods, this might create a consumer culture in which we are persuaded to follow the latest trend and associate certain brands with a higher status instead of buying that are most practical. Secondly, some advertisements even aimed at young children who easily expose with colorful and attractive advertisement for items such as toys or fast food. Since they are inexperienced and are easily influenced by these ads. Therefore, they often put pressure on parents to buy them things without thinking whether these products are healthy or wholesome.
There are measures which could be implemented to protect consumers from advertising. One method is that the government should ban advertisement of products that are harmful to people’s health such as cigarettes, drugs and alcohol. In some countries, it is illegal to advertise these items on television because they are addictive. Besides, advertising aimed at children should be controlled or censored. In additional, parent should encourage their children to take part in outside activities in the park or in the street rather than spend too much time on entertainment programs in which promote unhealthy products like fast food. This is not only maintains a healthy lifestyle but also limit to exposure to advertising.
In conclusion, it seems to me that advertising impacts on behavior consumers and workable measures are called for in order to mitigate the unfortunate consequences.
