Nowadays, more and more people decide to have children later in their life. What are the reasons? What are the effects on society and family life?

In recent years, it is becoming increasingly popular that young adults prefer having offspring later in their life. There are a number of reasons for this trend, which is having significant impacts on family life and the community as a whole.

There are two primary reasons why people are deciding against having children when they are young. Firstly, a great number of people consider that building their successful career is top-priority. If they embark on parenthood, they will have to spilt their time between working and bring up their offspring, which negatively affects their performance at work and their productivity output in the early stages of their careers. Delaying childbirth also allows the young further opportunities to fulfill their dreams, which they are unlikely to succeed in when having children. For example, they can have a richer social life, pursue their interests and hobbies, or even travel the world.

This tendency, however, is having undesirable impacts on family units and the community. One important concern for the family life is that having children late could be a massive challenge to older parents. Despite achieving a high socioeconomic status, as well as great experience and knowledge, these parents face the lack of mutual understandings, sympathy, and relatability with their children, due to the generation gap which is hard to narrow. Also, it is scientifically evident that getting pregnant after the age of thirty-five oftentimes carry more potential health risks, increasing the danger of having a miscarriage or stillbirth for old mothers, and infants are at greater risk of Down’s syndrome and other genetic abnormalities. This will lead to an inevitable degradation in the quality of the working population.

In conclusion, there are a number of motivators which encourage people to give birth later in their life. This development, nevertheless, has adverse effects on individual families and the society as a whole.
