In the developed world, average life expectancy is increasing. What problems
will this cause for individuals and society? Suggest some measures that could
be taken to reduce the impacts of ageing populations.

It is true that due to various advancements in healthcare, the population of developed economies is growing older. While this would exert some negative effects on society and the economy, some measures could be adopted to tackle this problem.
There are several possible consequences that industrialized countries may suffer from ageing population. Firstly, as average life expectancy rises, there would be more people receiving pension monthly. As a result, the government’s expenditures on pension and social benefits programs for the elderly would go up dramatically. This may hurt economic growth and create imbalances in the spending for other important sectors. Secondly, the climb in people’s life expectancy might result in a decline in the percentage of young adults. Consequently, working populations are likely to decrease remarkably in the future.
There are various options available for the government to deal with these problems. Firstly, the government should encourage young adults to give birth to more children so that the working population would gradually increase. This could be done by placing banners on the street or giving financial aids to families with 3 or 4 children. Secondly, immigration policies should be loosened to attract more young citizens from other countries. The younger the immigrants are, the more favorable the outcome would be. Thirdly, the government should provide opportunities for the elderly to remain in the workforce longer. This would not only raise the supply of labor forces but also allow continuity in tax revenues, which could reduce expenditure on pensions.
