The chart illustrates the proportion of female members of parliament in Germany, Italy, France, the UK ad Belgium over the course of 12 years from 2000 to 2012.
Overall, it is obvious that over this period, the percentage of women as members of parliament increased in all five countries. In addition, there was a notable rise in the figure of the UK.
As can be seen from the chart, this figure presents an analogous trend in Germany, Italy and France. In Germany, there was a slight rise in this proportion from 33% in 2000 to 37% in 2012. In France, the percentage climbed steadily from 25% in 2000 to 32% in 2012. In Italy, there was a sharp growth of this figure, increasing from 27% in 2000 to 33% in 2008, and finally reaching the peak of 39% in 2012.
Furthermore, the percentage of female members of parliament in Belgium was 17% in 2000, steadily rising to 24% in 2008 prior to dropping slightly to 23% in 2012. In contrast, in the UK, there was a rapid rise in this figure, climbing from the lowest proportion in 2000 to 23% in 2012.
