The line graph compares the number of serious violent crimes and how these rates changed between 1978 and 2000.
Overall, the figures for total violent crime and victimisations reported to the police were similar in terms of a general decline, meanwhile, there was a gradual increase in the trends of crimes recorded by police and arrests for violent crime. However, the rate of total crime is much higher than the others.
In the year 1978, total violent crime and victimisations reported to the police had the highest number, at 3500 and 2000 respectively. In the 1978 – 1986 period, the total violent crime level in the US varied more significantly than the ratio of people reported to police, before reaching the highest point of the whole line graph at approximately 4500. Through the remainder of the period, the US saw a decline in both rates, but the fall of total crime is more dramatic . During the last period, it remained above 3000.
Over a period of first 8 years, although both of remain rates had a small growth, the figure for crimes recorded by police was higher. The year 1988 experienced a slight reduction in the arrests for violent crime level. However, following the next decade, the two trends continued growing slowly.
