The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.The line graph compares the percentage of people aged 65 and more from 1940 to 2040 in Japan, Sweden and the USA.
Overall, the proportion of the elderly people increases in each country over the period shown. Additionally, Japan is expected to experience the fastest growth in its elderly population.
In 1940, about 9% of Americans was aged 65 and over, compared to approximately 7% of Swedish people and 5% of Japanese population respectively. Over the next 50 years, both the USA and Sweden saw gradual increases in their elderly people, which reached just under 15% of the population in 1990. Meanwhile, the percentage of Japanese people aged 65 or more remained below 5% until 2000.
Turning to the future, Japan is thought to witness the most dramatic increase in its elderly population, with a jump of 17% from 10% in 2030 to 27% in 2040, which is the highest figure in the graph. In 2040, the rates people who are predicted to be aged 65 or over are slightly lower than Japan’s figure, at 25% and 23% of the population respectively.Attachments:
