The line graph compares the amount of goods delivered by four means of transport, namely in the UK from 1974 to 2002.
Overall, the quantities of commodities which were transported increased over the period shown. Additionally, road was by far the most commonly used transport to carry goods.
In 1974, the quantities of goods transported by road was highest, at about 70 million tones, compared to only 4 million tones delivered by pipeline. Although there were minor fluctuations in the goods delivery, the figure for road rose slightly to below 80 million tones in 1994, and reached its peak at just under 100 millions tones in 2002. At the same time, there was a significant growth in the amount of goods delivered by pipeline to just over 20 million tones in 1994 and it remained this level until 2002.
Turning to water and rail, these two means of transport had the same starting point in 1974, at 40 million tones. While the amount of goods transported by water increased dramatically to below approximately 65 million tones in 2002, the figure for rail fell to its lowest level at 20 million tones in 1994 before going up to about 41 million at the end of the period.
