Cycling is more environmentally friendly than other forms of transport. Why is it not popular in many places? And how to increase its popularity?
In recent years, a large number of populations have been conscious about the negative effects from the usage of fossil fuel energy vehicles such as cars, motorbikes. However, the easiest way of travelling, cycling, has not been applied popularly although it is green to the earth. The reasons for this situation are varied and feasible solutions can be given to solve the problem.
There are some explanations why bicycle is in uncommon use. Firstly, cycling consumes a considerable amount of time to travel. In many countries where their pace of working is extremely fast, its citizens are not likely to cycle. For example, people in Hong Kong prefer driving to their workplace by car or subway because they are more convenient and time-saving. Secondly, drivers can be in danger because of the poor traffic system in some nations that do not support cycling. In developing countries where there is a mix of different vehicles such as cars, trucks, motorbikes in the same lane, it is unsafe for smaller ones.
Some measures can be taken to increase the popularity of cycling. Activists and social media can join hand in making campaigns to heighten the awareness of people. They can suggest people to put the health and environmental benefits ahead of convenience. Besides, authorities should give cyclists a priority by separating an own lane for them. For instance, government in French has successfully raised the number of people using bicycle by road separation.
In conclusion, I believe that cycling is a good way to travel and preserve the environment. Therefore, it will develop in a foreseeable future.
