Many people believe that an effective public transport system is a symbol of the 21st-century modern city around the world. This essay will discuss both the benefits and drawbacks of this trend.
This trend has several benefits. Firstly, public transport systems are effective tool to mitigate the impact of traffic congestion during peak hour. In well-developed countries, governments invest heavily in public transportation and sometimes the investment can reach up to hundreds of billions of dollar depends on the project’s scale and technology requirements. Having different available types of transportations, citizens can use buses or rail train instead of their own car to go to work as a mean of cheaper replacement method. It is really popular and useful in a modern city which has a large number of cars such as New York or London. Secondly, modern citizens come to see using public transport system as environmental protection responsibility gradually. Scientists have been showed that carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main reason that pollutes the atmosphere and increases the number of respiratory diseases. Most of it comes from private vehicles which can decrease if people move in the city by bus or rail train.
However, the drawbacks of this trend cannot be denied. To begin with, public transportation increases the risk of spreading dangerous diseases, for instance, flu or SARS. One example of this problem that Singapore government had to shut down public transport system for a while and give serious warnings about the pitfall of public vehicles during SARS outbreak in 2002. Furthermore, people living in developing countries, especially in the urban area seem unfamiliar with using rail train instead of driving their own cars. This can be explained because people in here value the time-saving and mobility of private transportation’s characteristics over environmental protection awareness.
In conclusion, I would argue that the advantages of this trend outweigh the disadvantages. Ideally, moderning cities across the world should invest more money in environmentally friendly public transport system in order to reduce the impact of traffic jam and emission to citizens.
