The pie chart illustrates the proportions of the food budget expenditure by an average family on having meals in restaurants compared to home cooking between 1970 and 2000, while the line graph compares how many fast food meals and sit-down restaurant meals were eaten per year over this period of 30 years.
Overall, the rate of spending on restaurant meals increased significantly over the studied years. In the same period, the number of fast food meals rose dramatically.
In details, just 10% of the total food budget were paid out for restaurant meals in 1970 in comparison with 15% in the following decade. This figure was the more twofold increase in 1990, at 35% and in the year 2000, the percentages of money spending on restaurants and home cooking were equal [50:50].
In 1970, the number of meals served in two kinds of restaurants stood at only 20. However, in the following period, the number of fast food meals climbed rapidly to around 55 meals per year in 1990 and peaked at almost 90 meals in 2000, while there were about 45 meals for sit-down restaurants in 1990 and this figure rose slightly by 3 meals in 2000.
