The diagrams below give information on transport and car use in Edmonton.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The pie chart compares the utilization on four different modes of transportation of citizens in Edmonton, which is measured in percentage. The table depicts the proportion of people’s purposes in using the car. It can be seen from the graph that almost people use car for their main vehicle. Meanwhile, the table show that the percentage of people using car to commute to work occupied the highest figure and the least ones are shopping and leisure acts purpose.
In terms of pie chart, there is over two-fifths in the proportion of car use, becoming the most prevalent vehicle among 4 modes of transportation, followed by 35% of LRT. The proportion of bus and taxi use is similar, at one in ten.
As for table, the percentage of people utilizing car for commute to work and business accounted for 55% and 45% respectively, which is the most and second principal purpose. The figure for reason taking children to school is exactly a-fifth. There are alike percentages in the quantity of people’s purpose using car for leisure activities and shopping, at less than a fifth.

I have a question that is not relevant to this essay, because I asked many teachers in here but so far I didn’t receive any response from them:((.
Cho em hỏi là mình có được dùng từ “among many others” cho nghĩa là “etc” được không ạ? Vì em từng được một giáo viên dạy là trong một bài essay thì không được dùng từ “etc” mà thay thế nó bằng từ “among many others”. Cám ơn anh/chị a.

Chào bạn, mình không được dùng ‘etc.’ trong bài formal essay nhé bạn. Bạn có thể dùng ‘among many others’, nhưng mình cũng khuyên bạn không nên dùng. Formal và academic essay chú trọng vào việc phát triển ý hợp lí và logic. Khi bạn đưa ra một ví dụ, bạn cần chắc chắn ví dụ của bạn liên quan cụ thể đến ngữ cảnh. ‘among many others’ là một cụm từ chung, không nêu rõ được vấn đề gì. Bạn chỉ nên dùng cụm từ này khi bạn đã discuss rất nhiều những vấn đề liên quan trước đó (chứ không phải chỉ 2 hoặc 3), và còn nhiều nhiều nữa mà bạn không thể kể ra hết.
Ví dụ, đề bài về environmental problems, và bạn đã liệt kê khá nhiều những problems như air deterioration, water pollution, acid rain, urban sprawl, waste disposal, và còn nhiều những vấn đề khác nữa như ozone layer depletion, climate change, global warming…
