In many countries, more and more people choose to buy imported food rather than food produced locally. Why do people buy imported food? What could be done encourage people to buy local food?
It is true that imported food has become an increasingly popular trend in many parts of the world. There are a number of reasons for this trend, but this situation should be addressed by encourage residents to eat food which is grown locally.
There are two main reasons why imported foodstuffs are preferred more by local residents. Firstly, food products from abroad gives people an appealing and appetizing appearance. Even these products are less pricey than those that are locally produced. Moreover, consumers come to expect certain high of standard packaging so that foods looks tasty, safe and hygienic especially in the case of some products is easy to prepare. Secondly, some foods particularly fruits and vegetables which are unavailable in their home country have been bought and imported to meet the demand of Vietnamese consumers. For example, the availability of cherry-a type of fruit commonly grown in Western countries such as Australia and the US in the supermarkets explain for the rise in popularity of imported foods and people are concerning about vary their diet and experience new flavors.
The government should take some measures to tackle this issue effectively. An important concern that food manufacturing companies locally should ensure that their foods always look fresh and clean. The quality and taste of products are the top priorities in deciding to purchase items. In this way, they are willingness to increase their spending on the local foods. Another measure that the government should impose a higher tax rate on imported foods or levy quota can prevent from excessive importation. This will eliminate the need to import those products from other countries and stimulate the local economy as well as increase demand for domestic foods as few people would be able to afford imported foods.
In conclusion, there are a number of reasons why more and more people prefer consuming a variety of foodstuffs from different part of the globe, and some simple steps should be adopted to promote consumer’s demand for the local products.
