Research has shown that overeating is as harmful as smoking. Therefore, the advertising of certain food products should be banned in the same way as the advertising of cigarettes in some countries. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Over the past few decades, more incurable diseases have stolen millions of lives every year. Some adopt a view that one of the main culprits is overeating, so governments should curb the plethora of food advertising. From my perspective, this is not the best proposal.
Undeniably, the advertisements of food has certain influences on customers’ purchase decision. In this technology-ubiquitous world, nowhere can we fail to see advertising, from televisions to mobile phone screens, public banners and stores’ walls .Many people, especially children, are easily attracted by eye-catching food advertising, which leads to overacting. For instance, some recent reports have revealed that the increasingly high proportion of obesity in adolescents is attributed to the proliferation of fast food such as KFC and McDonald. Therefore, some types of unhealthy food should be prevented from promoting through public media for the sake of human’s health.
As far as I am concerned, this suggestion has some benefits, but we have to accept other sacrifices. Indeed, some fast food chains are widely popular in many countries, which can bring a large amount of profits for such companies and tax sources for national authorities. If the proposal to forbid some types of food promotion negatively affects such business, this will be unjustified for such companies and state-owned budget will be adversely impacted subsequently. Instead, to eradicate this knotty problem, people should change their way to eat and do exercise more. In my opinion, mankind needs to eat more vegetables that contain essential nutrients and consume less junk food. Besides, they should do more active activities to enjoy a sound life.
In conclusion, although banning food advertising can partly tackle overeating, this is not a wise choice. At the heart of the problem, people’s lifestyle should be changed to alleviate the current status.
