It is often thought that the increase in juvenile crime can be attributed to violence in the media. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Many people believe violent contents in the mass media must be responsible for the growing rate of crime committed by teenagers. In my opinion, I completely disagree with this idea because of the reasons below.
Firstly, most inappropriate information is limited to youngsters to reach by the method of using the rating system in cinema or hiring hackers to block dangerous websites in the Internet. For example, the movie rating system enables parents to acknowledge the suitable age for watching the films, avoiding the negative affect of pornography or crimes to their children.
Secondly, most teenager criminals are originated from poor families in developing countries, who often have the low levels of living standard and can’t afford to purchase a television or movie ticket in the cinema for themselves. Thus, the impact of media to them might be insignificant to take into account.
Finally, I believe that the main responsibility for the increase of juvenile offending comes from parents. In many modern families, both mothers and fathers are paying too much attention on working in order to earn a living, ignoring the development of their sons and daughters. Thus, with lack of closeness from family, a child tends to be more affected by peer pressure, leading to bad behaviors and eventually being involved in social vices like drugs or criminals.
In conclusion, it seems to me that the violence in the media is never the reason of the – – rise in number of youngster criminals, which mainly comes from the insufficient care from parents. – –
