The table illustrates the figure of Australia’s nursing job comparing with the total workforce between 1987 and 2001. Overall, while the total workforce employments went up over the documented time, the nursing career witnessed a significant decrease in employment except directors of nursing.
The employment figure grew from 1987 to 2001. In 1987, there were 2.7 billion people employed. By 2001, these number had increased by 37 percent, reaching around 3.7 billion employees.
At the same time, almost all nurse-related employment went down. The total employment of nurses declined by 10 percent, from 180 thousands in 1987 to around 161 thousands in 2001. The senior nurses decreased by one-fifth, standing at 20 thousand people in 1987 to 16 thousand people in 2001. In particular, 2001 witnessed a 28 percent decline of junior nurses, from 39 thousand people in 1987 to 28 thousand people.
By contrary, 30 percent change from 1987 of directors of nursing had been noted, pushing the number of director’s employment to the record high of 5200 people in 2002.
In summary, the table demonstrates the fast decline of nursing professionals in the growing modern workforce of Australia from 1987 to 2001.
