The chart gives data on the figures of British inhabitants using bicycles as a mean of commuting in 12 different areas of the country from 2001 to 2011.
Overall, the number of people cycling to work considerably increased during the period. The most significant change was seen in Inner London, while the smallest was witnessed in Outer London.
In 2001, the most popular places that residents commuted by bikes were Inner and Outer London at 43,494 and 33,836 people, respectivey. In comparison, the figures for the other places ranged from under 1,000 to around 4,500 citizens with the noticeable low number in Gateshead, at only 816 people in 2001.
In 2011, Inner London, Brighton and Hove, and Bristol, City of doubled their numbers, which meant the percentage changes were in the vicinity of 100%. Simultaneously, more than 50% increase was also seen in Manchester, Newcastle upon Tyne, Sheffield, Cardiff, Gateshead and Exeter. Sharing the same trend, Leeds, Liverpool and Outer London also experienced a growth, however at a slower pace of less than 50%.Attachments:
