The chart below shows estimated world illiteracy rates by region and by
gender for the year 2000.

The given bar chart indicates the proportion of illiterate people in six particular sectors which was shown on the chart in the last year of the 20th century.

It can be seen that developed countries have the lowest illiteracy rate in the given arears. Meanwhile, the numbers of illiterates in the South of Asia stands at the first rank. Besides, rate of women who are illiterate are higher than that rates of men.

In developed countries, the proportion of illiteracy was under 10 in 2000. It only accounted for nearly 2 for male and 3 for female. East Asia and Oceania had a notable gap, as we can see, it was approximately doubled between the ratio of men and women. Furthermore, numbers of male and female who live in Latin America and Caribbean area was around 10 in that years.

There is a remarkable difference in the rest region. The proportion of these three zones is far higher than the first three areas. It is noticed that the numbers of illiterates in these zones fluctuated around 50 for female and 30 for gentlemen, especially, the ratios of women and men in these zones were nearly two-folded. South Asia achieved the highest rate in the mentioned regions and stood at the first rank in the year of 2000.
