The diagrams illustrate the development process of the salmon, from its beginning as an egg up to mature.
Overall, the lifespan of a salmon includes three main physical stages of development in three different aquatic areas, and it takes around 10 years for egg develop into adult salmon.
In the first stage of salmon life, eggs are produced on small stones that stick to reeds in the slow-moving water area of the river. After approximate 5-6 months, salmon eggs hatch into “fry” which is just three to eight centimeters long. Then, they spend around four years to live in a lower river which has fast-flowing water.
By the time fishes reach twelve to fifteen centimeters long, they are termed “smolt” and start migrating into the sea to have a marine life. After around 5 years living at sea, salmon grows much bigger, around six times longer than those in the previous stage. And then, they swim back to their birthplace to lay their eggs and repeat their life cycle.
