The graph below shows the proportion of the population aged 65 and over between 1940 and 2040 in three different countries.

The line graph compares the percentage of people aged 65 or more in the USA, Sweden and Japan, for the years 1940 to 2040, in twenty-yearly intervals.
Overall, the number of elderly people in three nations increases over the period of 100 years. Although three countries are similiarly in a rising trend, Japan shows the most significant change.
In the 1940-1980 period, there was a marked increase in the proportion of population over 65 in Swenden and the USA. Though the number of American elderly people remained relatively stable after 1980, it is expected to rise again just before 2020 and climb to approximately 23% in 2040. The percentage of the Swedish over 65, on the other hand, fluctuated widely and will reach its peak with the figure of 25% in 2040. It can be seen that although the rate of elderly people in Sweden was lower than in the USA in 1940, it is predicted to be slightly higher after 100 years.
Over the same period, the proportion of population aged 65 and over remained stable under 5%. But after 1980 the rate began to increase slightly. In 2020, the percentage of the Japanese elderly people will be about 7. Within 20 years, from 2020 to 2040, the proportion will rise dramatically and reach the highest point of the whole line graph, 27%, in 1940. Starting with the lowest rate in 1940, Japan is predicted to rank first in the number of elderly people among three countries.
