23/2/2019: More and more people want to buy clothes, cars and other items with famous brands. What are the reasons? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

It is true that purchasing items from reputable brands is increasingly prevalent in recent years. There are a host of reasons attributed to this trend and from my perspective, this exerts a negative impact on both individual and society.
There are two primary reasons behind the tendency of buying well-known brand products. One prominent rationale is the people’s beliefs on personal possessions reflecting wealth, social status and appearance. In fact, they may believe that wearing clothes or jewelley which are prohibitively expensive from luxurious brands such as Nike or Addidas would show off their affuence and enhance their self-image and be more respected by other people. Another significant reason is that famous labels offer consumers a sense of assurance. Nowadays, the number of fake and artificial products has rised dramatically, leading to the fact that it is extremely difficult to distinguish between the authenic items and the fake ones. Therefore, purchasing products from giant boutiques which are often of great quality and reliability may make consumers no longer worry about these durability and origins.
This tendency could bring many detrimental effects to people and society as a whole. First, on individual level, this trend may cause a materialistic lifestyle to youngsters, which in turn sinks them into financial problems. For example, in order to possesa a new Iphone X which is sold at a exorbitant price, children may use anyway such as placing pressure on their parents or even stealing from them a vast amount of money or other illegal activies, which in the long run shapes a bad habit on them. Second, the rise of dominant brand names may lead to monopoly and push other small brands on the verge of bankruptcy. In other words, the large companies attempt to dominate and finally wipe out other smaller rivals to maintain their positions. Consequently, less and less innovative items or environmentally friendly products are designed by small enterprises due to the fear of disapperance on the fierce market after a short time.
In conclusion, the great quality of products and people’s perception of personal belongings showing the wealth and social status are two key reasons of this tendency. I strongly believe there are a lot of demerits to such a trend may and some measures should be proposed to mitigate it.
